Shadowgraph Photography Rig

A shadowgraph photography rig was designed and built in spring 2014 as an imaging project with Professor of Mechanical Engineering George Sidebotham. The rig is built around an existing flashback combustion lab setup and creates shadowgraphs of the flame. An HD webcam, high-power LED, foam core projection screen, and a mount for the flashback lab equipment, are secured to frame constructed fromĀ 80/20. This setup allows the user to easily position system elements where necessary for optimized shadowgraph images of different flame types. The resulting photographs are not only intriguing images, but serve as a combustion-related teaching tool for the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Cooper Union.
